VAPING ABROAD: WHICH COUNTRIES?

FOR VAPERS THE WORLD HAS SUDDENLY BECOME A LITTLE SMALLER

The tabloids have been bursting at the seams recently with the news that the city of San Francisco is taking steps towards banning the sale and use of e-cigarettes from late 2019 in an effort to protect its children from the “evils” of vaping. Obviously we have views on this, pertaining largely to the fact that the same city fathers seem to have no issues with their children having easy access to regular tobacco products as well as marijuana, and that San Francisco is currently home to the HQ for Juul, a leading provider of e-cigarettes in the US.

We’re a bit spoiled here in the UK as we have relatively relaxed laws around vaping, you just need to be over 18 to buy and use e-cigarettes. And both Public Health England and the NHS see vaping as key to helping the UK’s 8 million smokers quit so actively endorse it, with one NHS trust even setting up e-cigarette shops within the grounds of two of its hospitals.

But the rest of the world tends to be rather more uptight about the possession and use of e-cigarettes, with restrictions ranging from an outright ban to limiting their use to non-nicotine e-liquids only. So before you jet off on holiday, here’s our list of where vaping is and isn’t allowed around the world. NB: this list is not exhaustive and was correct at the time of publishing. Situations can change at the drop of a hat and the legal picture is still pending in some countries. So it’s up to you to check and double-check for yourself before you travel.

COUNTRIES WHERE E-CIGARETTES ARE BANNED ALTOGETHER

Thailand: E-cigarettes are seen as akin to Class A drugs in Thailand so they have some of the strictest rules in the world. Even owning a vape pen can land you in trouble, and you could face up to 10 years in prison if caught in possession of one, let alone using it. Leave your e-cigarettes at home.

Singapore: Since February 2018 owning an e-cigarette in Singapore can land you with a fine of up to $5,000. Not worth it, leave the vape pen at home.

India: The government is trying to bring in restrictions across the whole continent but so far only the following states have outright bans that are strictly enforced: Jhrakland, Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Jammu and Kashmir, Maharashtra, Puducherry, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, and Uttar Pradesh. It’s a confusing picture and one which is changing all the time. Better leave the vape pen at home.

Other countries where the manufacture, sale and possession of e-cigarettes is now illegal

Brazil (since 2014); Brunei (since 2010); Argentina (since 2011); Cambodia (since 2014); Egypt (since 2015); Jordan (since 2009), Lebanon (since 2016); Qatar (since 2014)

COUNTRIES WHERE NICOTINE-FREE VAPING ONLY IS ALLOWED

Australia (Queensland and Northern Territories); Japan; Norway; Malaysia; South Africa

Like we said, the world is getting smaller if you’re a regular vaper. Laws and attitudes change all the time so it’s up to you to check before you travel. For more advice take a look at our top tips for travelling with your vape pen and e-liquids.
